The Quarterly Applauds
Highlight of the 1981 celebration of DU Founders’ Day was the opening of the DU Hall of Honor at the Intemational Fratemity Headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. Pictured above are Educational Foundation trustee Dr. Herbert E. Smith, Indiana ’52; Delta Upsilon President J. Paul McNamara, Miami ’29; Dennis H. Cheatham, Indiana ’65, chairman of the board; O. Edward Pollock, Virginia ’51, chairman of the Joint Fratemity/Foundation Development Committee; Martin T. Baxter II, Virginia ’80; and Chairman of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation, W. D. Watkins, North Carolina ’27.
The President's Report - J. Paul McNamara
In my first column I want to express to Herbert W. Brownell, Nebraska ’24, the appreciation of Delta Upsilon Fraternity for his leadership as President during the past two years. He brought to the office a long and distinguished career in law and government. All who worked with him in fraternity affairs enjoyed the association and wish for him good health and many happy years ahead.
In my period as President it is my hope that I can contribute to a program that will bring undergraduates and alumni of our chapters in closer working relationship. Herb Brownell devoted his column in the October, 1981 issue of the Quarterly to a discussion of the opportunities and the pleasures that are involved in undergraduate and alumni interchange. Since my home is Columbus, Ohio, I will personally pursue the development of this program by early visits with undergraduates and alumni at my own chapter, Miami, and at Ohio State and Marietta. By the time I write the next column I hope I can also report on similar conferences at other Ohio chapters. If you have workable suggestions to implement this undergraduate/alumni program please write to me. It is my observation that a chapter with active alumni participation rarely has serious trouble and the strongest chapters in our Fraternity uniformly enjoy strong alumni support.
Second, during my term as President I want to push ahead vigorously with the program to celebrate in 1984 one hundred and fifty years in the life of Delta Upsilon. This push ahead includes a determined effort to pass the $400,000 primary goal of the Second Century Fund. The Second Century Fund is an objective of Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation formed in 1949 by our late Brother Hugh E. Nesbitt, Ohio State ’14, former President of the Fraternity. The Foundation provides financial support for the educational activities of the Fraternity, chief among which is the annual Leadership Conference. The campaign for the Second Century Fund needs and deserves your generous support. May I respectfully urge you to take the time to acquaint yourself with this opportunity to invest in the development of leadership in young men who call you brother.
Annual DU Leadership Transition
Cheatham Re-eleeted as Chairman, McNamara New President
Delta Upsilon’s graduate legislative body, the Assembly, selects the remainder of the slate, presented by the nominating committee and from the floor. Elected as President of Delta Upsilon, succeeding Herbert Brownell, Nebraska ’24, was J. Paul McNamara, Miami ’29, who had served the fraternity for several years as a vice-president and as secretary and more recently chairman of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. In addition to his terms as Vice-President of Delta Upsilon, McNamara also served the fraternity as a director from 1947 through 1955. He is widely credited with the study of the operations of other fraternities that resulted in the birth of the Delta Upsilon Leadership Conference in 1948, and has been involved in all phases of fraternity life since his initiation. The fraternity is indeed fortunate to have a Brother so deeply familiar with its work as the new president.
In other action, the Board approved Brother McNamara as vice-chairman of the Board; and approved the recommendations of the Chairman of the Board, Brother Cheatham, for the standing committee assignments for the current program year.
